Membership

   The Society has at present about 300 Members and 39 Honorary Fellows. Membership categories include Life Members, Ordinary Members, Associate Members, Student Members, Fellows and Honorary Fellows. Apart from the mainstream translation and translation teaching, members come from various fields, including education, creative writing, publishing, public service, business and other professions. ​

     Members are reminded to update their email addresses and other personal details with the Membership Secretary at membership@hkts.org.hk to ensure timely access to Society news and filed information.

Membership

Eligibility for Membership

Ordinary Members

    Any local resident satisfying any of the following requirements may be admitted by the Committee to Ordinary Membership on payment of Membership Fee and annual subscriptions thereafter:

  • Have a Bachelor's Degree from a recognized tertiary institution, or

  • Have passed the Society's Advanced Diploma Examination, or

  • Have at least 7 years of practical translation/interpretation experience or related teaching experience.

Life Members

    An Ordinary Member may be admitted by the Committee to Life Membership on payment of a Life Membership Fee which shall henceforth exempt the member from payment of annual subscriptions. A Life Member shall have all the rights of Ordinary Membership.

Associate Members

    Any local resident satisfying any of the following requirements may be admitted by the Committee to Associate Membership on payment of Membership Fee and annual subscriptions thereafter:

  • Have a qualification in translation from a recognized tertiary institution, or

  • Have passed the Society's Diploma Examination, or

  • Have qualified as Member of the Institute of Linguists, United Kingdom.

Corresponding Members

     The following persons may be admitted by the Committee to Corresponding Membership on payment of Membership Fee and annual subscriptions thereafter:

  • Any Ordinary or Associate Member leaving Hong Kong and wishes to retain Membership of the Society, or

  • Any non-local resident with practical experience in translation or translation teaching duly proposed by a voting Member and seconded by another voting Member.

Student Members

    Any student registered on a full-time translation programme offered by a recognized tertiary or post-secondary institution and subscribes to the objects of the Society may be admitted by the Committee to Student Membership on payment of Membership Fee and annual subscriptions theafter.

    Student Membership status will not be sustained after graduation or leaving the tertiary or post-secondary institution.

Fellows

    The Committee may from time to time elect Ordinary or Life Members of at least 5 years of standing and with outstanding contributions to the Society to be Fellows of the Society.

Honorary Fellows

    The Committee may from time to time elect persons with distinguished contributions to the field of the translation or translation teaching to be Honorary Fellows of the Society.

Corporate Members

   The following types of organisations can apply for Corporate Membership: translation companies, language services providers, educational or professional institutions offering accredited programs or courses in translation or related fields, and other relevant organisations with significant involvement in translation or related activities, having been incorporated as a business for at least two years and having evidence of business goodwill or proven track record.

Notes

  1.  Associate Members, Corresponding Members, Student Members, and Honorary Fellows shall have all the rights of Ordinary Membership except the right to: (i) vote at General Meetings, and (ii) serve on the Executive Committee.

  2.  The decision to admit any person to any membership category shall be made by the Executive Committee at its sole discretion and such decision shall be final and conclusive.
