Media for All 2025, "Breaking Barriers: Media Localisation in the Age of Global Platforms" Conference Report

1 Aug 2025

The Hong Kong Translation Society (HKTS) co-organised the "Media for All Conference 2025, Breaking Barriers: Media Localisation in the Age of Global Platforms" from 28 to 30 May 2025, as Official Collaborator and Partner of the Conference.

The conference was hosted by the School of Chinese at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts and the TransMedia Research Group. Held under the theme “Breaking Barriers: Media Localisation in the Age of Global Platforms,” it marked the first time the prestigious international conference on audiovisual translation (AVT) and media accessibility was held in Asia, reinforcing HKU’s role as a global hub for social impact, knowledge exchange, and innovation in the humanities and media research.

The conference brought together over 150 scholars and professionals from more than 30 countries, including academics, AVT industry leaders, and accessibility advocates. Over three days of vibrant exchange, participants engaged in 8 pre-conference workshops and seminars, over 100 presentations, 39 parallel sessions, and 5 industry talks, covering topics such as subtitling, game localisation, generative AI, sign language interpretation, and audience reception studies. Our HKTS Technology Officer, Luis Damián Moreno García, was invited as Workshop Speaker, and shared his findings regarding the integration of GenAI into the teaching and learning of software localisation, supported by a Teaching Development Grant.

We extend our sincere congratulations to the organisers for the exceptional success of this conference and we look forward to being part of the next iteration in Porto, 2027. We look forward to lending our support to future local and international events.
