Message from the President
In the words of the celebrated poet and Nobel laureate Octavio Paz, “Translation is a more advanced stage of civilisation”. This profound statement underscores the pivotal role of translation in bridging cultures, fostering global understanding, and driving forward the progression of our society.
Paz’s words serve as a reminder of our noble mission in an era of rapid technological evolution. Whilst automated translation tools and digital platforms are becoming integral to our work, they have also highlighted the irreplaceable value of human expertise in capturing the full richness, cultural nuances, and subtleties of a language — an advanced stage of civilisation that technology is yet to reach.
Our profession faces an exciting blend of challenges and opportunities. The world today is more interconnected than ever. As we strive to bridge the gap between languages and cultures, our bilingual and multilingual competencies, as well as our multicultural understanding, are becoming more important than ever. As translators, we are not just linguistic experts, but cultural ambassadors creating bridges and opening new windows to the world.
Here at the Hong Kong Translation Society, we are committed to enhancing the professional work and status of translators. We consistently refine our practices to provide our members with the most current resources. Together, we aim to rise to the challenges and seize the opportunities brought about by technology. As a community, we remain grounded in our shared passion for translation and dedication to the intricate nuances of languages.
We are privileged to have you join us on this remarkable journey!
