[Seminar] David Hawkes: The Art of Translation

Date:

6 Oct 2023

In a distinguished collaboration, the Hong Kong Translation Society (HKTS) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Library joined hands with the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) to present a riveting lecture by Professor John Minford, the esteemed Emeritus Professor of Chinese at the Australian National University.

This event took place on October 9, 2023, as a notable part of the ongoing exhibition series "Mislay Me Not, Forget Me Not: David Hawkes and The Story of the Stone", which honours the monumental contributions of the renowned translator David Hawkes. The exhibition series, which began on October 6, 2023, and will conclude on March 15, 2024, is a tribute to Hawkes' enduring influence and his masterful work that bridged literary cultures.

Professor Minford's talk illuminated the nuanced and complex nature of translation, drawing upon the illustrious example set by Hawkes, particularly in his translation of the revered Chinese literary masterpiece The Story of the Stone.

The lecture at CUHK was met with an impressive turnout, attracting 147 engaged attendees. In a touching addition to the event, Ms. Caroline Hawkes, carrying forth the familial legacy, graced the occasion with her presence.
